Honoring Our Ancestors
Working to bring the photos and films of Harvey Richards to the internet, I find myself focused on images from the past that stay in my mind. So, to share these moments, I am offering individual photos for your attention with a thought or two about them. Enjoy.
To start, consider this screen grab from “Decision in the Streets” (1965) by Harvey Richards showing Vincent and Vivian Hallinan marching up Market Street to protest the Goldwater dominated Republican convention being held at the Cow Palace that year. The Hallinans were one of the leading families in the Bay Area for progressive causes for many years. We owe them a large debt of gratitude for their visionary leadership.
Behind them is a banner of the DuBois Clubs, a student organization named after W.E.B. DuBois, one of the greatest historians ever. The Hallinan’s sons were instrumental in creating the DuBois Clubs and in leading many of the most important civil rights and peace demonstrations during those years.
