Critical Focus Print Edition
Estuary Press and The Harvey Richards Media Archive started their existence with the 1986 book publication of Critical Focus, the Black and White Photographs of Harvey Wilson Richards (Estuary Press, 1986). This book brought together the black and white photos that Harvey had developed in his own darkroom in the garage and used to publicize events and movements that he was trying to help.
Written and edited by Paul Richards, PhD, the photographer’s son, Critical Focus compiles Harvey’s black and white images of California farm workers, the peace and civil rights movements, the environmental movement and the devastation left by the logging industry in the forests of the west coast. It also includes photos from his trip the the Soviet Union in 1961 with his wife Alice Richards and his son, Paul. The book was designed by Rene Castro and Deborah Netsky and printed by Autumn Press. If you are a teacher, you can get this book for the cost of postage through the Zinn Education Project. Critical Focus is available in print and eBook formats.
The eBook contains more than the photos and text of the original 1987 book. The eBook edition of Critical Focus is a gateway to well over 1000 new photos and 22 documentary films by Harvey Richards available on the internet through the Harvey Richards Media Archive and Estuary Press. A new “List of Photographs” offers instant navigation to any photo in the eBook. “Endnotes” in the eBook contain links to the Harvey Richards Media Archive by subject.
