Bay Area Civil Rights Actions, 1963

Bay Area Civil Rights demonstrators

December 1, 1963, Berkeley, California, Jack Weinberg, Sug Grime, Willie Ballard

Harvey Richards took this Bay Area civil rights demonstration photo in December, 1963 during a time in the civil rights movements when interracial unity was the name of the game.  The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) conducted pickets of businesses in downtown Berkeley that supported segregation.  Here, three activists, Jack Weinberg, Shug Grimes, and Willie Ballard, picketed the Bank of America.  In 1964, the University of California tried to prohibit fund raising for civil rights on campus.  Jack Weinberg was arrested while sitting at a table in Sproul Plaza and the Free Speech Movement was launched.
