From May 2, 2014 to August 3, 2014, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will have an exhibit on “Ralph Fasanella: Lest We Forget”.  The exhibit is curated by their “folk and self-taught art” department. The Smithsonian acquired Harvey Richards photo of the 1962 demonstration against the House UnAmerican Activities Committee hearings in Los Angeles for the purpose of providing “additional context to the artworks on display.” It will be exhibited along with Ralph Fasanella’s art.

“Fasanella worked in the garment industry, as a truck driver, ice delivery man, union organizer and gas station owner before he committed himself to painting in 1945. Untrained as an artist, Fasanella developed an astute and accessible style that reflected his affiliation with and commitment to the working class. His alternately subtle and brash paintings functioned simultaneously as memorial documents, didactic tools, and rallying cries and they made the possibility of a better society palpable to his own community and others like it. Fasanella is often remembered for his iconic admonition: “Lest We Forget,” an impassioned plea to remember and honor the legacies of our forebears.

“National Tour
“After closing in Washington, D.C., the exhibition travels to the American Folk Art Museum in New York City where it will be on view in time to commemorate Fasanella’s Labor Day birthday.”  http://americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/archive/2014/fasanella/

Estuary Press is proud to have a photo by Harvey Richards in the Smithsonian to help provide context to an exhibit of an artist with “affiliation..and commitment to the working class.” Very fitting. Thanks to the Smithsonian for recognizing kindred spirits. The photo on this post is part of the Harvey Richards Media Archive photo gallery “Peace and the HUAC Anti-Communist Crusade.”
